India is going to organize its first ever national level examination on cow science on 25th of February 2021. The examination will be conducted on the subject “gau vigyaan” (Cow science) in an online mode with no examination fee by Rashtriya Kamdhenu Aayog (RKA). It is a government body constituted to organize animal husbandry on modern and scientific lines and to take steps for preserving and improving breeds and prohibiting the slaughter of cows and calves and other milch and draught cattle. The exam will be held in regional languages too which are about 12 apart from Hindi and English.
During a press conference, the chairman of RKA Vallabhbhai Kathiria said, “The cow is full of science that needs to be explored. It plays an important role in 5 trillion economies of the country.”
According to him, the examination will contain 100 multiple choice questions on the subject of cow science. An official notification released by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying stated that the exam will have four categories in total. Primary level for classes up to 8th standard, secondary level from class 9th to 12th standard, college level for people who passed 12th standard and fourth category will be for the general public.
Dr. Ashok Kumar Mishra currently serving as Dean Administration of Roorkee Engineering and Management Technology Institute shared his views with Eat News about the initiative taken by the government, “National exam on cow is a very good initiative to give message to society regarding the importance of cow. In basic education, an essay on Cow is an important part of course in different classes. There are many chapters are included in the syllabus of different classes to highlight the importance of cow in Indian culture. So, cow is already a part of academic sector from long time.”

He also worked as a Head of Department of Masters in Journalism and Mass Communication (M.J.M.C) in Institute of Management Studies, Noida and believes cows represents Indian culture and has their own importance. He said, “Cow is most important animal in Indian culture. It is considered as Gau Mata, is denoted as cow is the godess, in the Hindu religion. Cow milk is very useful, so it is very necessary to take some steps for promoting protection, conservation and development of cows and their progeny. This exam will be a little step to achieve this task. But by this exam, students will able to know something new regarding cows by participating in examination.”
He further added, “It will create awareness about cows since common man is unaware from the importance of this precious animal but will understand its value through this examination. Not only the value of Gau Mata in Indian culture but also it will motivate them to concentrate for the safety of cows. This examination may motivate people to take initiative to start protecting the generation of cows.”
The Ministry also mentioned about the examination to remain transparent and impartial and informed that all the study material in the form of blogs, videos, the reference books, literature will be uploaded on the official website soon. Recently last year in September, Indian police arrested 139 people out of which 76 were cow slaughters. “If people will be aware and will understand the importance and value of cow, naturally the cruelty and crime against cows will decrease. When they will understand that cows are a precious gift of nature for the development and the growth of human beings and protect the health of mankind, they will try to be kind with the animals”, said Dr, Ashok Kumar Mishra.
According to him, apart from cows, people should be aware about other animals too. He said, “There are number of animals that are decreasing due to different reasons such as Bengal Tiger, Black Buck and Asiatic lion.”
Meanwhile government is getting ready for conducting its first ever national level examination on cow science, they are making sure to not miss any step in that process. According to the Ministry, results will be immediately declared on the website of Rashtriya Kamdhenu Aayog. Certificates will be given to all. Successful meritorious candidates will be given prizes and certificates afterward. Appreciation letters will be issued to all those who help in organizing. People from different sectors are gathering together to organize this examination successfully. Scientists, entrepreneurs, Gau sevaks, farmers, women, youth and senior citizens are all contributing for making this successful.
“Cow is a gift of God to mankind. So kindly do something to protect and for development of cow. This is the responsibility of every person because not only milk products but also every product of cow is very useful such as milk, cow dung, urine. The milk of cow has gold and able to cure the cancer disease”, said Dr. Ashok Kumar Mishra.
Cow has always been a part of Indian academics right from the primary stage in different ways. Shifting it to the national level will definitely help in spreading awareness about it but since it is the voluntary, what will be more interesting to see is, how many people actually bother to learn about cows and will sit in examination?
