The race to buy Manchester united is set to be one of the most fascinating bidding wars of the century. This is after Sir Jim Ratcliffe announced he would join the race. The British international is set to go head-to-head with the Qatar Islamic Bank-Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani chairman. Apart from the two, Manchester United has also attracted serious bidders from Saudi Arabia and the United States. Sir Jim Ratcliffe, a British billionaire and owner of the petrochemicals company INEOS, has reportedly expressed his interest in acquiring the Premier League giants. With both parties now vying for control of the club, the future of Manchester United is more uncertain than ever.
Jim’s statement stating that he had placed a bid to buy the club comes after a few days when the chairman of QIB (Qatar Islamic Bank) submitted his offer. A statement released by INEOS says that Jim Ratcliffe offered to buy most of the club ownership. In the statement, INEOS added that their ambitions and desire to compete would make Manchester United the number-one European club. Moreover, they also said they would do their best to represent the fanbase and the community and make them central to any crucial decision affecting the club.
INEOS acknowledges and appreciates how far English football has developed over the years. However, they do feel that the culture is now at crossroads, and a decision has to be made over the next path. For this reason, INEOS wants to be part of the individuals to lead this next chapter of modern, progressive, and fan-centred type of football, thus deepening the culture of English football in Europe.
One of the main targets INEOS sets if they secure ownership of Manchester United is to qualify, compete and win the most lucrative title in club football-The Champions League. Notably, the statement also says that they would recreate the success the club enjoyed in its glory days. “Putting Manchester back into Manchester United.”
Jim Ratcliffe, among the wealthiest individuals in Britain, has always shown interest in buying the club. It is also known that Manchester United is his boyhood club, which he still supports. Jim also owns another sporting club, such as Nice, which plays in France’s Ligue 1, and FC Lausanne-sport from Switzerland’s Super League club. He also owns a cycling team known as Ineos Grenadiers.
Chris, a fervent supporter of Manchester United, recently spoke with EatNews about the ongoing plans to buy Manchester United from its present owners, the Glazers. Chris underlined how crucial it is for interested parties to think about various issues before placing a bid. He emphasized that the new owners need to pay attention to the opinions of the club’s supporters and consider topics like current debt, racism, human rights, women’s rights, and the rights of LGBTQ people.
He also underlined the need for the new owners to have a long-term outlook for the team and a willingness to make financial investments to ensure its success on and off the field. Chris believes that the new potential owners ought to put a high priority on diversity and equality and take a strong stand against any oppression or prejudice. He continued by saying that the club’s owners must use their enormous influence and platform to advance good change and benefit society.
A “soft” deadline of Friday at 10 pm had been set by the Glazer family, who are the current owners of Manchester United.
On the other hand, the chairman of the Qatar Islamic Bank-Sheikh Jassim confirmed that his bid was for 100% ownership of Manchester United. In the statement, the Sheikh also pledged plans to restore Manchester United back to its glory days both off and on the pitch. Apart from reinstating the club, the statement added that fans would be an essential component of the club.
Jassim’s bid is set to a 100% debt-free transition. Nine Two Foundation, owned by Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani, will invest in the club and its training centre and promise to improve the infrastructure at the club massively. Sheikh Jassim is the son of the former Qatar Prime Minister Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jaber Al Thani. Jassim received his education at Sandhurst military academy in Britain, where he graduated as an officer cadet and is currently the chairman of Qatar Islamic Bank. He has also served other roles in a variety of clubs. The Sheikh, born 41 years ago, says he is a lifelong supporter of Manchester United.
The Glazer family purchased Manchester united in 2005. However, the recent fallout between the ownership and the majority of the fanbase forced the family to announce that the club was up for sale as of November last year. Currently, only four contenders are on the list to purchase the club: Sir Jim, Sheikh Jassim, Josh Harris from the US, and David Blitzer, who was also among the contenders to buy Chelsea football club. At the moment, only the Qatar and Saudi bids are debt-free. In that case, if Sheikh Jassim were to take ownership of Manchester United, the club would join Manchester City (with UAE) and Newcastle united (with Saudi Arabia) as the clubs with the wealthiest owners in the Premier League. As we have seen before with Manchester city, wealthy owners have the power to turn clubs into dominant beasts. It is no secret that most Manchester United fans hope the QIB bid goes through and works just as it worked for their “noisy” neighbours.
