Posted in News

4 mn readXi Jinping’s successful re-election as Chairman of the People’s Republic of China and Chairman of the Central Military Commission marks the beginning of his third term. He has already been re-elected as General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, and has now completed his “re-election” as Chairman. His third term is considered to be the end of the collective leadership system of the Chinese Communist Party after Deng Xiaoping and may also signify the official return of “strongman politics” in the history of the CCP. At the same time, the Republic of China on Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen has proposed a plan to restore cross-strait air passenger services and will consider the conditions proposed by China to restore flights, demonstrating Taiwan’s goodwill. The most important consideration for restoring cross-strait air passenger services is said to be meeting the demands of the people.

3 mn readI write to you on Human Rights Day this open letter with regard to the upcoming Winter Games to be held in Beijing (“Beijing 2022”). As you are aware, there have been a lot of concerns over the human rights record of the Chinese Communist Party (“CCP”), China’s ruling dictatorship. Some of the human rights abuses were examined by the Uyghur Tribunal recently, a non-binding people’s tribunal examining a large body of evidence of abuse against Uyghur Muslims by the CCP. The Tribunal yesterday, headed by Sir Geoffrey Nice, QC, considered that there was evidence, beyond reasonable doubt, that the CCP was committing crimes against humanity, and conducting a genocide, against Uyghur Muslims.

Perseus: The Trump card

Posted in Opinion

3 mn readIt is not unfair to describe Donald Trump as a divisive figure. Since his election as President of the United States in 2016, his policies have seen very public and outspoken support and condemnation from both sides of the political spectrum in the United States. Like those in the United States, Hongkongers seem to also have a love or hate relationship with Donald Trump.
