National election in India is around the corner and will take place in 2024. However, state polls conducted last month revealed victory of current ruling party in three out of four states. As per the information posted on Election Commission’s website, Bhartiya Janta Party won in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. Out of 90 assembly constituencies, the political party bagged 54 while the opposition Congress 35. Whereas in Rajasthan, 115 seats out of total 199 seats. And in Madhya Pradesh, the party is set to begin its fifth term after taking over 163 seats out of 230. Telangana is the fourth state, where Indian National Congress remained in power and took over 64 seats out of 119.
It is assumed by political experts that these results of polling is very likely similar to the actual results of elections. Considering large population of country, polling in two different phases is an appropriate approach. General elections which are expected next year in the country will either fix the position of BJP even more deep or the opposition will come get the chance to form new administration. Meanwhile, all political parties doing massive preparations and are discovering their roadmap for elections that will be carried out nationwide.
Political expert Dhara Bishnoi called election in India is like a festival. From preparation to voting and result day, the whole journey gets celebrated among politicians, political parties and even voters. She said, ‘Elections are a major part of politics. And it is a reflection of what your political party has done so far. In India mainly, since we are on top in population, the whole energy becomes festive. Now we are stepping into 2024 which is again a year of judgement for current administration. And all the political parties including BJP have already started promoting their agenda and working on their campaign. Elections in India is a sight to see and when it is general elections, it becomes more extraordinary’. The election Commission body is responsible to administer the whole process smoothly and within rules and regulations. The body looks into elections of Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies, State Legislative Councils and offices of the President and Vice President.
While describing Election Commission’s functions, Dhara told EAT news that it plays a key role in democratic country, like India. ‘The commission has different roles and each one of them is essential. Conducting a fair, free elections at periodic intervals is a prime duty of this body. It also issues Model Code of Conduct for political parties and candidates which is kind of certain ethics that are same and necessary for everyone who wish to be involved. Political parties need to get themselves registered before steeping into elections’, she said. Furthermore, she also believes, India have been following democratic policy since it got freedom and it is self-adapted responsibility of political parties to follow ethics in this process. Election commission has also reached out to Supreme Court to put lifetime ban on politicians from contesting into elections, if they are convicted in any case.
Opposition in country are forming alliances against each other and presumably to defeat current ruling political party, BJP after it won votes in polling results in state Rajasthan, where current administration is Indian National Congress. Dhara said, it is difficult to presume beforehand who is going to win general elections but there is a possibility of BJP to come back. She said, ‘It is not accurate to pass a definite comment who is going to form government next year. But the way BJP has established its foundation since its first win and is moving forward along with its agenda, work could not be ignored. In last few years, India has grabbed attention globally in several domains. From emphasizing on relations with west countries to India’s economy becoming top 4 of the world, its independent and strong position in Russia-Ukraine war to manufacturing its own Covid vaccine and exporting it to countries during pandemic, and getting presidency of G20 this year, are all work put in by this government which people have not overlooked.’
She also added, ‘Meanwhile, we are also looking at some big alliances happening. Parties are coming together for this election with a common motive. And it is at present, to shake the grip of BJP. Statistics of polling revealed a lot about what people are expecting and looking forward for. Usually, the results are closer to the real situation and if this is to be considered, the Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh are already in BJP’s hand’.
Can it be said, ruling party BJP in India after winning in three states is already steps ahead against opposition in elections 2024? Supporters are affirmed about the results and is expecting Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister of India for few more years.
