Andy Haldane Sites British Public Health as A Hindrance to The UK Economy

3 mn read

Andy Haldane has cited that the deteriorating health of British citizens has played a significant role in holding the country’s economy back. According to Andy, this is the first time since the Industrial Revolution that public health has impacted the economy.

Andy, the chief executive at RSA (Royal Society of Arts), explained that there has been little or no progress regarding health and well-being. He added that if there were any progress, it would have been heading in the wrong direction for more than 100 years. And because of this public health problem, the cost of living and the economy have been affected negatively.

In a recent interview, Andy admitted that public health and well-being were in retreat for the first time since the Industrial Revolution. He added that, despite health being a driving factor of the economy over the last two centuries, it had become a hindrance to the growth of British residents.

While the Health Foundation thinks tank’s REAL Challenge lecture, Andy explained that one of the factors that contributed to the sharp decline in the British economy was the loss of a vast workforce via COVID-19. The Health Foundation is an independent charity organization focused on delivering better health and well-being. The REAL Challenge is an annual event organized by the Health Foundation to sensitize the public on the necessity of better health.

Andy added that the worldwide health crisis only acted as ” the edge of a cliff.” The Royal Society of Arts chief executive, who also served as a chief economist at the Bank of England, added that UK’s expenditure on healthcare was relatively low compared to other G7 nations. Therefore, Andy said it shouldn’t be surprising when macroeconomic events such as many unfilled vacancies inhibit progress. According to him, the answer is simple, insufficient workforce.

The Bank of England recently announced that it was considering further increasing interest rates. The main reason behind this was to discourage a further hike in inflation-linked salaries from workers in response to labour deficiency. Since the start of last financial year, interest rates have constantly been increasing. According to the central Bank of England, raising interest rates prevent second-round effects caused by the increase in income on inflation over the years to come.

A recent report on the future of employment support conducted by a relatively new commission showed that the United Kingdom is one of the five industrialized countries with a weak labour force than before the Coronavirus pandemic of 2019. the report also found out that the UK is currently on a destructive path and will have a record-worse labour market by the end of next year.

The other countries on the list include Latvia, the United States, Iceland, and Switzerland. While the employment rate in the other four nations has increased by around 2% over the past year, the United Kingdom’s employment rate has remained stagnantly weak. The UK’s employment rate is typically computed by measuring the number of employed citizens as a fraction of the entire workforce.

One report said that if the employment rate continues to be this weak by the start of 2023, the United Kingdom would be the only developed nation with a lower labour market than before COVID-19. It is estimated that around 600,000 workers have left the workforce. Out of this number, more than 200,000 cases, which include workers leaving for five or more years, are health-related.

Breaking down the numbers yields around 30,000+ people with long COVID; therefore, it can’t work. There are an additional 50,000 workers who were forced to retire early over the past two years due to health-related problems. Most people lie in the never-worked group, which hosts around 250,000 people. Around two-thirds of the people in this group are students, while the rest are individuals with health disabilities who had never worked before or tried and left.

The situation has also been made worse by the baby boomer generation retiring too early. In addition, lower rates of migration have also worsened the state of employment rates. Based on the 2016 migration trend, the United Kingdom has 500 million fewer non-UK-born workers today. The head of the Employment Studies Institute, Tony Wilson, explained in an interview that this revelation allows the government to restructure its employment approach. Tony added that it was vital to build a concrete plan for the future that would foster higher economic growth and improve living standards. The UK needs to prioritize their health to ensure future economic growth. From obesity to depression and even sexual gratification, the UK urgently needs action. The World Health Organization are showing that current efforts by the UK government aren’t cutting it, and the populace needs to be more involved with their health. Essentially, the UK is on a collision course with disease due to its newfound obsession with being “Modern.”
