Pakistan’s nuclear program is irregular: US President Blamed

3 mn read

The US President during his address to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee heavily criticized Pakistan’s nuclear program by referring to Russia, and China. The US president alleged that Pakistan is one of the most dangerous countries in the world and Pakistan’s nuclear program is irregular, fearing that it could be used by anyone. Pakistan showed a strong reaction to the statement by US president Joe Biden regarding Pakistan’s nuclear program.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif rejected the statement attributed to the US president and said, “It is misleading and contrary to facts. No one should be concerned about our nuclear assets, the past decades are evidence that Pakistan is a very responsible nuclear state. The nuclear program is managed by an effective technical and foolproof command and control system”.

Premier said “Pakistan has always shown a very responsible role regarding the capability of nuclear weapons. Pakistan has fulfilled its strong commitment to international standards including International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on non-proliferation, safety, and security”. Mr. Shahbaz Sharif said that Pakistan and America have a long history of friendship and cooperation based on mutual interest. Therefore, unnecessary statements should be avoided. “I have a sincere desire to cooperate with America for the promotion of regional peace and security”, he further added.

During a press conference in Karachi, while responding to a question regarding the statement of the American President, Foreign Minister Mr. Bilawal Bhuto Zardari said, “in an informal event, American President spoke about many countries where Pakistan was also discussed. Our nuclear assets are safe and in accordance with all international laws, the US ambassador has been summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to give a demarche, and the US ambassador will be asked to provide an explanation of this position. This statement will not have a negative impact on Pak-US relations. The reason for President Biden’s statement could be a misunderstanding that arises from a lack of communication. If the safety of nuclear weapons were a concern, it would have been raised in the meeting with me. We will have many opportunities where connections can be improved. Above all Pakistan will continue efforts to take its relations in a positive direction with the United States”.

Meanwhile, the US ambassador has also been summoned to the foreign office in Islamabad on said issue and a strong demarche was conveyed to the U.S. Ambassador. Acting Foreign Secretary Mr. Jauhar Saleem called in US Ambassador Donald Blome to deliver a demarche on the recent remarks made by US President Joe Biden on 14th October during a Congressional Campaign Committee reception.

According to an official statement issued by the foreign office, it is said that “Pakistan’s disappointment and concern were conveyed to the US envoy on the unwarranted remarks, which were not based on ground reality and facts. It was made clear that Pakistan is a responsible nuclear state and its flawless stewardship of the nuclear program, adherence to global standards and international best practices were well acknowledged, including by the IAEA. It was essential to maintain the positive trajectory of Pakistan-US relations and the close cooperation between the two sides to build regional and global peace”.

Former PM of Pakistan Mr. Imran Khan also spoke on this issue, on his official Twitter said, “on the basis of which information the American President came to the conclusion regarding Pakistan’s nuclear capability? When I was the prime minister, I knew that Pakistan’s nuclear command and control system was extremely secure. Pakistan was never involved in wars like America and did not attack any country”.

Ex-foreign secretary Azaz Chaudhary while speaking to EAT News said, “This statement of Joe Biden has created a diplomatic and political stir in Pakistan. Calling Pakistan’s nuclear weapons program ‘unregulated’ is not correct and completely contrary to the facts. America itself has supported Pakistan’s nuclear program on several occasions. The relationship between Pakistan and the United States has certainly been subject to ups and downs, but Pakistan has been expressing its desire to improve bilateral relations”.

Meanwhile explaining President Biden’s statement on Pakistan, White House Press Secretary Karen Jean-Pierre said, “No demand was placed in the readout (record of the statement). The (US) president wants a safe and prosperous Pakistan which is important to US interests. What you heard from him last night is nothing new”.

Ups and downs in relations between Islamabad and Washington are not new, and in recent days, relations between the two countries seem to be improving.
