Visitors in Canada can apply for work permit under Trudeau administration because of the extended temporary policy by two years. The decision says, visitors who already held a work permit within 12 months can now request of interim work authorization to begin working under their new employer quicker. The pandemic did restrict the borders of the country with strict travel and work policies, which are now set to expire in Canada by the latest development. Statement released by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) said, ‘Leaving this temporary policy in place makes visitors an option for employers in Canada, as many are facing significant labour shortages during this period of economic expansion’.
According to the Global news, surveys released earlier in January from Banks of Canada shows that maximum respondents are ‘reining in their spending’ and calling it a recession in the country. As per the forecasting of financial advisory firm Deloitte, ‘A deeper recession than first expected as Canada’s economy slows more drastically’. Unemployment could be seen as one of the major reasons behind the policy, believed by expert Shruti. Also, Canada’s citizenship policy is way moderate comparatively to other countries, makes it the most preferred country to migrate for work, by Indians.
How specifically this policy is going to be beneficial for Indians is explained by International relations expert, Shruti. ‘As per the Canadian census of 2021, percentage of South Asians in Canadian population makes up to 7.1 percentage which means 2.5 million. Out of which Indians are the maximum. Available information says Indian population according to the census of 2021, is 1.85 million that is 5.1 percentage. And with time, the numbers have escalated. The statistics says by 2022, approximately Indian population has become 1.9 million. It is quite evident that the most preferred country to migrate for Indians is Canada. The policy definitely will work in favor of Indians’, she said.
Healthcare sector is a department in Canada that heavily recruits every year and offers job across the world. Kamaljeet is an Indian citizen who has applied for Permanent residency in Canada after studying and working for two years. According to her, Canada is a suitable country for Indians for many reasons. She said, ‘I came here to pursue my higher academic career in Medical field and now I have got the stable job, I have applied for Permanent residency and waiting for it. This country does not feel like foreign in any sense. I come from Sikh background, and here the Sikh community is larger than any other. Also, people are very generous and kind here. They do not exclude us from any local celebration or preparation and are inclusive in nature. And the main reason is, country allows to migrants to apply for PR within just two years of working, very lenient policies compare to any other country.’
Kamaljeet has plans to call her family once she gets PR. But the work permit policy has made things easier for her. She told EAT news, her brother received job offer from a hotel in Canada and he is waiting from last 6 months. This policy will make process quicker for him, she thinks. ‘I read about the work permit policy and there is an option for requesting interim work authorization. This way will help my brother to start his journey as soon as possible. Also, my father have a few friends here and he can also apply for work permit as a visitor, after a job in his hands. I feel like my dream is coming true that I always thought of when I was a kid’, she said. India is called a diverse nation because of the number of diverse religious backgrounds mainly represented by Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians. Largest national Sikhs proportion in the world after India is in Canada with 2.1 percentage.
Expert Shruti discussed why Canada is offering jobs so easily to migrants. She brought up Statistics Canada Data and said, ‘Canada’s unemployment rate was at 5% and that there was an overall decrease in the number of vacancies to 848,000 from over one million earlier in the year, a report mentioned by economic times. They have created 326,000 jobs and are pushing the numbers to overcome unemployment in the country. Apart from this, population has always been a challenge in Canada and they would want to overcome this by introducing new policies for the people. So, yes jobs are like a bait administration is using to overcome their unemployment and economic crisis, along with population challenge.’
Canada administration’s action of introducing work permit policy could be a step to overcome their economic and unemployment crisis, but it has also made easier for migrants to stay a little longer with stable career and extended families. People like Kamaljeet in Canada are now looking it as a possible opportunity for her dream to become true.
