Aruna Mavji Varsani born in Gujarat, India is an India migrant who migrated to Kenya when she was 11 years old and since then it has become her home, her country. She said, “I am proud to say I am Kenyiandian“. Professionally, she is a Montessori trained teacher and becoming a lecturer in Montessori teachers training. She told how she ended up here at World Association of Women Warriors, “World Association of Women Warriors contacted me and treasured me as the Ambassador of Kenya. It is a journey that has just began and so I am looking forward to empowering more girls with the foundation. And that’s why we are ’together for better’”.
Being on a seat of President, it’s all about responsibilities and working for the people under you and leading them to reach the set goal. On asking, how it feels to be one and what all new responsibilities now she has on her shoulders, Aruna quoted, “I feel privileged to being appointed as the ambassador of Kenya. I don’t see it as more responsibility, but as my duty to support women around the world. I am honored to get the recognition for the charity I do.“
Being a Montessori trained teacher by a profession, Aruna has always actively worked for children. Sharing about her past projects she said, “As a director in a Montessori based school, I know that education is a necessity and not a privilege. Literacy allows for a better future, and so I started establishing libraries in rural areas which turned into a virtual educational center during the Covid period. So far 28 libraries have been established with over 36,000 books available in the various libraries.“ She further added, “The second project close to my heart is the reusable sanitary pads. I support girls in various community-based areas and upcountry. The sanitary pads are stitched by local tailors and we fully support them in the production. The material used is Kenyan sourced and hence supports them as well.“ Being conscious about the environment she said they promote eco-friendly pads with a higher percentage of cotton which is chemical free, this makes pads safe and hygienic and prevents infections. Aruna Varsani has supported 7334 girls till date.
A child protection unit has opened at Wamba town, Kenya on 21st December 2020. While describing the initiative and being a part of it Aruna said, “The child protection unit supports the children within rural areas who go through domestic violence, Female Genital Mutilation, early marriage, rape and abuse. The CPU is a safe space for them to come and get the support they need.“ According to the statistics presented by the “Girls not Brides“ 23% of Kenyan girls are married before their 18th birthday and 4% are married before the age of 15. According to the information given on site, there lot of problems that leads to these marriages including, Female Genital Mutilation, adolescence pregnancy, harmful traditional practices and escape.
Women is the most vulnerable and affected community of the society. Several organizations are working to empower them and Aruna is also working with one of them. On asking, is there any similar situations or difficulties you find, Kenyan and Indian women face, she believes, “There are lot of similarities between Kenyan and Indian women, however there are challenges we face in Kenya due to cultural beliefs. To educate and change these believes is one of our most challenging missions.“
“Kenyan people are rich culturally and we have a strong sense of community. It is not difficult at all to keep motivating and encouraging people to stay positive since there is a strong bond between all Kenyans. When we see each other struggling, we support each other and try to uplift each other. With this mentality we are able to spread positivity with ease“, said Aruna.
While describing briefly and gladly about Kenyans, she said, “Kenya is a community in itself, and I have never felt that I do not belong here. Kenyans have the biggest hearts and are always welcoming to everyone. Because of their welcoming nature, it has been very easy to be able to give them back in a form of encouragement during dark situations and let them know that they are not alone.“
She discussed about her latest projects that are coming up in Turkana, Voi, and Marsabit which is for reusable pads and the ongoing projects are building self-sustainability to the foundation. She added working for women and children has changed her in so many ways. “It made me more compassionate, giving and has opened my eyes to the reality that lot of women face which is heart breaking. It has given me a voice where a lot of women do not have one or cannot use theirs“, said Aruna Varsani.
