Sudden rocket attacks by Hamas militants into nearby Israeli towns has killed dozens including abducting others on a major Jewish holiday. According to the information, Hamas militants attacked South of Israel by air, land and sea. People in Israel were awakened by sound of incoming rockets, blaring of sirens and the disastrous impact. Sirens were heard till North, Tel Aviv. Right after the unprecedented event, Prime Minister of Israel declared a ‘war’ against Hamas. While addressing the nation, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, ‘This morning, on Shabbat and a holiday, Hamas invaded Israeli territory and murdered innocent citizens including children and the elderly. Hamas has started a brutal and evil war. We will be victorious in this war despite an unbearable price’.
Meanwhile Israel has launched airstrikes in reciprocation in Gaza. The conflict between the nations is going for long and has witnessed hundreds of killings. People are fleeing from both the countries after deadly situations. Hamas officials cited long-simmering sources of tension between Israel and the Palestinians, including the dispute around the sensitive Al-Aqsa mosque compound, which is scared to both Muslims and Jews and remains at the emotional heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, quoted AP news. Expansion of Jewish settlements on Palestinian lands have also stayed a matter of dispute among the countries.
Indian International relations expert, Saloni Saxena commented on the situation and said, ‘It is worrisome and a tense situation not only for the countries who are involved but also for others. We are already in Russia-Ukraine war and are affected by the consequences, simultaneously a different war will affect extremely. People are on ground, paying the price of such gruesome wars, which is completely devastating for humankind.’ Further she added that situation will get worse if countries will not intervene with alternate solutions to the situation.
Netanyahu in his public addressal called Hamas militants, an enemy who slaughters women, elderly people and children. ‘An enemy that abducts the elderly, children and young women, that slaughters and massacre our citizens including children’, he said. Hamas has released various videos where militants could be seen dragging bloodied bodies of soldiers, standing on dead bodies and some stripped to their underwear. They have also claimed of captivating Israelis including senior military officers. No immediate statements have arrived from countries like United States, France, United Arab Emirates, who also have close ties with Israel now. However, Saudi Arabia has released its statement that they are closely following these developments.
How India is looking at this war depends on the bilateral relations both the countries share. Miss Saxena told EAT news that countries share a decent relation and are significant partners in multiple terms. ‘India is third largest Asian trade partner to Israel and 10th largest overall trade partner, which automatically make it an important one. If we look at the bilateral relations, there have been developments in multiple sectors since the recognition by each other, such as defence and security, agriculture, economic and commercial relations, investment, culture and education and the political relations. Whereas with Palestine, India does not have a statistical relation due to Israel’s indirect involvement in trade’, she said.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his solidarity with Israel after the attack. ‘Deeply shocked by the news of terrorist attacks in Israel. Our thoughts and prayers are with the innocent victims and their families. We stand in solidarity with Israel at this difficult hour’, he said. Prime Minister Modi labelled it as a ‘terrorist attack’. Although for Palestinians, it is a fight of retaliation against several attacks that has carried by Israeli forces during the course of year. A senior Hamas official Bassem Naim told AP news, ‘We have always said that normalization will not achieve security, stability, or calm.’
In the other news report by AP quoted, ‘Enough is Enough, Deif who does not appear in public, said in the recorded message. He said the attack was only the start of what he called Operation Al-Aqsa Storm and called on Palestinians from east Jerusalem to northern Israel to join the fight.’ On asking, is it a terrorist attack or an ongoing war that wasn’t acknowledged by the international organizations or the countries, long ago, Miss Saxena said, ‘The attack was carried suddenly with weapons and intention of mass destruction, so definitely it is a terrorist attack but we cannot deny the fact that the dispute is long and ongoing, which is not looked into seriously. Today we have reached into an era of wars, where every nation is fighting for territories. I believe, a diplomatic, non-violent approach is the only way to maintain a stability and balance of power, in present.’
Infrastructures have been deteriorated and hundreds have been killed. Israel is attacking Gaza in a response, and as per the reports coming, around 230 people have been killed and 1600 are injured in the attack. Question is, are international relations and politics of no use in a state of war?
