Indian army appears to be adequate as no Gorkha solider is recruited for the third time since the new Agnipath scheme commenced

3 mn readAs per the information, this is the third time that Indian army will not be recruiting Gorkha soldier in their unit since last June. Agnipath scheme started under current administration was approved in 2022. It is a military duty style scheme and is the only route to serve in the army. The recruits named Agniveers serve for a tenure of four years that include training for six months followed by 3.5 years of deployment. Once retired from the service they will have the opportunity to apply to continue in the armed forces. The scheme was opposed by opposition including aspired candidates, but was put out anyways. Since then, more than 20,000 Agniveers have been recruited and kicked off their training at various regimental centers’.

Started with Indian Military nursing service in 1888 to becoming a part of Women’s Royal Indian Naval service and Rani of Jhansi regiment, today National Defense Academy has opened its entrance examination for female cadets. After the Supreme Court’s judgement in 2021, female candidates have been allowed to sit in NDA entrance exam. Women were not allowed to serve in combat units such as armoured corps, infantry, artillery and mechanized infantry in India until Army Chief General Manoj Pande in a press conference before Army day said that Army has decided to commission women officers into the artillery regiments and a proposal on it has been sent to the government.
