‘An Old Friend’ Xi Jinping Meets Bill Gates in China

3 mn read

In mid-June, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Bill Gates in his first meeting with an American entrepreneur in years. During this meeting, Jinping called Gates an ‘old friend’ and said that he hoped the two countries would find a way to cooperate and work together to benefit them. The meeting was held at the Diaoyutai State Guest House in Beijing, a traditional location used by Chinese leaders over the years to receive senior guests from outside countries. Xi enjoyed meeting with the Microsoft Co-founder and philanthropist for the first time in three years. He added that Bill Gates was the first American entrepreneur he completed this year.
In a video, Xi said that the relationship between the United States and China was entirely dependent on the citizens of the two nations. The Chinese president said he had faith in the American people to make this relationship work. In addition, Xi also noted that with the current global situation, there were many ways in which China and the United States could cooperate for the good of the two nations and their citizens and the whole world. Bill Gates, who arrived in Beijing on June, 14, told the media he was honoured to meet the Chinese president. He added that he had a ton of productive conservations with Xi Jinping before the meeting in Beijing and was confident that more important topics were to be discussed during the week.
The Microsoft Co-founder also mentioned in his blog post that global health, climate change, health inequity, and development challenges were among the major topics he discussed with the Chinese president. However, this came as news as for around three years, Xi Jinping had not met with any American entrepreneur or top-level official as China had shut its borders to help mitigate the effects of the Coronavirus. Even after the restrictions had been lifted, Xi Jinping mostly met with entrepreneurs and top officials from other countries. Furthermore, the CEOs and top entrepreneurs who have visited the country since it opened its borders earlier this year have met only with ministers and other government officials.
In 2020, Bill Gates decided to step down from the board of directors at Microsoft in order to dedicate his full attention to philanthropic endeavors centred around global health, education, and climate change. The last public meeting between Bill Gates and Xi Jinping happened in 2015 at the Boao Forum in Hainan Province. In a letter addressed to Bill Gates in 2020, Xi thanked the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for their $5 million pledge to assist China in fighting COVID-19. According to sources, President Xi also talked about the global rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), where Bill Gates urged the United States government and developers to introduce their AI tech in China. Another source revealed that a Microsoft Development business in China plan was also discussed in the meeting.
The Chinese government’s recent tightening of restrictions on foreign business dealings has led to a steady increase in tension levels between China and its trading partners. This comes after the tension between the nation and Sino-U.S. continues to intensify due to China’s new increasing focus on national security. It was anticipated that the scheduled visit to China by the United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, would happen weeks before Bill Gates’ visit. However, for unknown reasons, the meeting, whose main aim was to stabilize the relationship between the two largest economies and rivals on the planet, has faced intermittent delays.
On Wednesday last week, the Chinese foreign minister Qin Gang had a tense call with Blinken, advising the United States government to stop meddling in matters that affected China’s security. During his meeting with Bill Gates, Xi assured him that China would not adopt the conventional approach of a dominant nation seeking hegemony. Instead, Xi expressed his willingness to collaborate with other countries in order to attain shared objectives of development. China has repeatedly accused the United States of seeking global dominance. During the same visit to Beijing, Bill Gates also gave a speech on the necessity of using technology to solve the challenges of the global health industry at the Global Health Drug Discovery Institute.
All in all, significant development in diplomatic and technological spheres may be seen as a result of the recent meeting between Xi Jinping and Bill Gates. The summit, which majorly concentrated on public health, technological innovation, and climate change, shows the possibility for successful collaborations between public and private organizations to address more technical issues. This experience reminds us of how practical cooperation can be and the fantastic possibilities that arise when influential individuals join forces to drive positive change worldwide. Their shared goal of creating a sustainable future fuel their efforts, demonstrating the immense potential for global impact. The meeting has the potential to influence significant initiatives’ future directions and provide avenues for further cooperation, highlighting the value of such interactions in resolving today’s most urgent problems.
